Getting started

Before you get started here are a few tips and things you should know:

  • Remember that most of the homes and buildings on this tour are privately owned. Respect their privacy by keeping your distance. Do not trespass.
  • Use care on this tour. Never walk, ride your bike or drive while staring at your phone, tablet or computer. Main Street and St. Clair Street are very busy so mind traffic.
  • For your convenience and for simplicity sake. We built this tour to start and end at the Bancroft-Stanahan Historical Museum on Church Street but there are simple ways that you can improvise your tour or start elsewhere in the village.
  • There are four different tour lengths: the Complete Tour about 90 stops or most of the day, the North Tour about 45 stops or a good afternoon, the South Tour about 45 stops or half the day or the Free Tour which is 5 stops.
  • To advance to the next stop on your tour (or back track), scroll to the bottom of the tour entry and there are “next” and “previous” links to follow.
  • You can always skip ahead on your tour by clicking on the tour name near the bottom of each tour stop entry. This will produce a list of stops with the last stop on the tour appearing at the top and working backwards to your present location.
  • You can improvise your tour and start anywhere by either typing in an address or a street name in the search box. This will produce a list of matching entries. We do not use abbreviations. Not every home is in this list so if you enter in a specific address and nothing appears, try just the street name and other nearby stops on that street will appear.
  • This tour harnesses the power of Google Maps. Make sure its installed on your phone or device (most of the time it is). Each tour entry has a Google Map showing its location. Click on the “View Larger Map” link if you need help finding it. This will open Google Maps. From cell phones and other portable devices, you will see a blue button marked “Directions.” Click on this and several buttons at the top of the screen will appear asking to route you by your current mode of transportation. We suggest clicking on the walking icon. This will show you route options. Click the “Start” button in the lower left. Once you arrive at your destination, toggle back to your browser or app with the tour on it.
  • If you don’t know where you are at, we have created an “I’m lost” page showing places such as the museum, the police station or the center of town. Use the procedure above to get directions.

That’s all there is to it. Have fun and be safe!
